What Causes Pain/numbness In Arms, Shoulder Blades And Back?

My husband has pain and numbness in his arms, shoulder blades, shoulders, and upper back, and the lower back burns. This only happens when he sleeps-no matter what position. He says his left arm is numb sometimes through the day. What could be the cause?
