What Causes Pain/numbness In Thigh?

My upper/outer left thigh wakes me in the middle of the night, first I lose feeling then it goes numb and then such severe pain that I cry. One doctor said my underwear is resting on a nerve I dont believe him I think it's more serious, I'm tired cause I dont sleep and now don't want to go to sleep cause I now it will happen again.
