What Causes Pain On Swallowing After Treatment Of Throat Infection?

Hi so I just got told I had Quincy on Friday, I had a needle in the throat to drown out the puss and was given two types of antibiotics. However since returning home I feel like my pain is even worse with swallowing and I can t eat anything, this has now caused me to go on to codeine. Is it normal to feel like this after the procedure or do I need to go back and see about having a tonsillectomy ?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about being told to be suffering from Quinsy, aspirated the pus and started on antibiotic. The pain has increased on returning home and needs Codeine.
The increased pain indicates that the abscess has not been drained fully or maybe there was bleeding inside.
This can be confirmed by the following ways:
Go back to the Doctor or ER.
Clinical examination can tell whether the swelling increased or reduced.
CT scan or MRI is of tremendous help.
Consult an ENT Surgeon to have proper evaluation and proper drainage of the abscess if present.
Ask for tests of blood as raised White cell count has to be known, diabetes to be ruled out.
Continue the medications and ask for strong anti-inflammatory medicine with painkiller properties.
Tonsillectomy is the last resort, may not be needed at the moment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
