What Causes Pain On The Back, Buttocks And Left Leg?

Hi, it s been three weeks and my back/side pain has not vanished. I m 65 years old and in good health, otherwise. I m sure that my issue is a sciatica. My left side (back), buttocks and left leg (thigh) are becoming more and more painful. Not constant, but it is a progression of painful increments. I m taking ALEVE and ADVIL, but I want to see a specialist. Should I seek an orthopedic back specialist or ????? I cannot wait for this issue to disappear.....which is what I ve been doing, Thanks for responding...Ray

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You need rest, hot or cold packs & anti-inflammatory pills over the counter (Ibuprofen) twice a day after food till this pain subsides.

CT scan thereafter would decide the root of pain (it can be lumber spine of the sciatic notch of hip bone).

Treatment would depend on the cause &severity of pain(physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medicines, steroid injection locally, surgery in few cases).

Consult an orthopaedic surgeon first. Who would refer you to specific expert as per your need?

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
