What Causes Pain On The Big Toes?

Ok - it seems really odd to me, but both of my big toes have sudden bursts of severe pain right at top tip... I m 61 yrs old and this is brand new. Once in a while they will also get very numb as though they are asleep - but only at the tip! The pain bursts are ridiculously painful - and so sudden! I do not have diabetes, not does it run in my family.... this has begun following a surgery 6 months ago that went somewhag awry and resulted in 7 weeks in hospital - but it had nothing to do with my feet or toes! I thought it was so terrific that WEBmd now had interactive service - but I m on MEdicaid and don t have the $$ to pay for an answer! Thanks anyway!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

We will try to help you in the best way possible. First of all, it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, you need to have your uric acid levels checked as gouty arthritis can present like this. X-rays of affected joints may be needed.

At this moment OTC analgesic like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be used for pain and inflammation. Local application of Capsidol gel can also help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
