What Causes Pain On The Toenails Upon Pressing Them?
Hello, I completed chemo for breast cancer last December. My fingernails lifted and big toenails loosened but never came off. When pressing on top of those tails with the slightest pressure, I have a burning pain. Have learned I am unable to wear close toed shoes such as flats due to pain. Sandals and gym shoes are it. Is there anything that can be done and should I see a foot doctor?
Although nails typically fall off during chemotherapy, it does not happen to all patients. Certain chemotherapy drugs also cause peripheral neuropathy. A loose nail will be perceived as foreign and will hurt with certain positions and shoes, this pain will be made worse if you are experiencing peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy causes neuropathic pain ( burning, poking or even numbness) which can be alleviated with Pyridoxine supplements as well as Pregabalin or Carbamazepine. I recommend trying a week long course to see if there is improvement in pain. You should also visit the foot doctor to see if the nail should be removed and to also rule out ingrown and infected nails.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Felicia Manickam
