What Causes Pain When Swallowing?

I am having pain when swallowing, ears hurt a little. Throat is not red. Feels like mucus is stuck at back of throat. When I lay down at night, I have woken up coughing/choking. Not bad, just enough to wake me, so I ve ended up sitting up in chair. Is this possibly allergies. I do have them, but have never had them bad or anything like this.
