What Causes Pain When Swallowing?

My 11 year old daughter has been complaining that she has a hard time swallowing and has often felt she was about to choke. It has gotten so bad that if she starts to have it happen, she refuses to continue eating. I can tell it is very frightening for her. I dont know what to do. I have made sure she has pleanty of fluids especially at meal times. She says it even happens when she drinks liquid and that once it starts she just cant swallow after that. She has never been able to swallow even the smallest pill but this is getting worrisome.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Your child needs to be examined by a ear, nose and throat specialist. She might be having some sort of obstruction, possibly due to infection in the posterior pharynx and hypopharynx which can only be evaluated after detailed clinical examination. Encourage her to take whatever food and liquid that she can otherwise it can cause dehydration.
