What Causes Painful And Frequent Urination?

The last time I had what I thought was a UTI, the lab results were negative for bacteria. Since I had blood in my urine, I saw a urologist. No cysts or cancer was found, but I still have painful and frequent urination occasionally. When I feel symptoms coming on, I drink cranberry juice. That stops the symptoms for another day. Any ideas? I am 70 and otherwise healthy. I take the usual meds plus one for gastric reflux.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

That depends on where you feel the pain.

If it is in your urethra, it could be a UTI or STD (get a new urinalysis and swab, first may have been a false negative).

If the pain is higher up in the abdomen over the pubic bone, it may overactive bladder syndrome.

This can often be treated by anticholinergic medicine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Anders Mark Christensen, General Surgeon
