What Causes Painful And Swollen Throat?
my 18 yr old sons throat is swollen almost completelly over, painful, the drs found a black pocket in his throat, they drew blood from it and did multiple swabs, no fever present, his tonsils are intact the doctors said its not tonsilitis and its not strept-- what could it be

This is hematoma most probably.
Go for ::
Blood tests- Complete blood counts including that of platelet count, sugar, kidney functions.
*Bleeding time, clotting time.
* Was there a history of swallowing something hard or did he try to swallow something hard and tried to clean forcefully.
Wait and watch.
MRI of the neck to see the extent of the hematoma and to plan for for further treatment .
