What Causes Painful Black Toenail?

Have a black big toe nail (only half of it) very painful woke me up. Does not appear to be infected and I cannot remember hurting it. I do spin classes wonder if it is a build up of small injuries? Did not hurt yesterday at all just really hurts now? What do you think please?

Painful black half nail after trauma is most commonly due to sub ungual hematoma. . That's collection of Blood under nail... most of the time it resolves by itself. but if pain persists surgical evacuation is best
