What Causes Painful Blisters On The Toes?

About 12 days ago I developed blisters on the tops of my toes just under the nail bed. They filled with so much liquid each day and night that I had to lance them. Now they burn like a severe burn would feel. They are better, but I cannot put on a sock or shoe....touching them is painful. I ve been putting a burn/blister almost clay like salve on them which seems to be drying them out. Is this viral or something else? I had worn the shoes many times before. Thanks!
