What Causes Painful Breathing While Having Rapid Heart Rate?

I suffered from serious blood clots in both of my lungs about two years ago. About three months ago I started to experience painful breathing while exerting myself at work or while jogging. I went to my doctor to see if I passed another clot, but the cat scan showed nothing.

The pain spreads to my arms and my fingers tingle while walking at a brisk pace. Again this is occurring when my heart rate is elevated from working out. The painful breathing goes away once my heart rate slows. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic.

Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Saddiq ul Abidin. I have read you question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

It would have more convincing if we had known, the kind of workup you have gone through, when you had experienced blood clots in the lungs. That would let us know, what has been ruled out and to evaluate further plan that is advisable to be taken. As recurrence of these symptoms are suggesting, that the problem is still lying there, and has not been eradicated completely.

Also the kind of symptoms you have shared, makes your pain less cardiac and more pleuritic as cardiac pain is neither positional, nor pleuritic (changing with respiration).

The tingling sensations in your fingers with painful breathing can also be due to skeletal anomalies like cervical rib or may be a sequential of cervical spondilytits or costochondritis, but that needs to be evaluated on your radiographs and by a detailed examination, however since you have undergone CT scan so chances become rare to miss such obvious findings.

However blood in lungs, alongwith pains and increased heart rates may also reflect infective etiology.

Vasculitidies can also present with such symptoms so a you need to repeat a detailed workup including CBC, ESR, CRP, CT chest with contrast (if plain wasn't suggestive), as well as ANA, cANCA, pANCA, RFTs, UA, and blood cultures. An EKG is also mandatory for any kind of chest discomfort even if it is not cardiac straight away. You can visit a pulmonologist and have a detailed examination and a workup.

I hope this answered your question. If you have more queries I am happy to answer.Otherwise rate and close the discussion

Regrads.
