What Causes Painful Bumps On The Knee?

My son has a bump on his left knee. If I squeeze it or touch it, he says it hurts. The white head has gotten bigger since Wednesday evening and it doesn't have any redness. He has not fallen and it is the circumference of a pencil eraser. No discharge, and I'm afraid to pop it...NEED HELP!!!!
