What Causes Painful Cut On The Upper Gum Area?

I have a very painful area on my upper gum to the one side . This has been present for the last few days and I assumed it was an ulcer so was careful when brushing and have been religiously using mouthwash too. Tonight I had a close look as it doesn t seem to be getting in the slightest better and I saw what appears to be an indentation on wide cut in the gum. It is red and swollen and I ve never had this before. Should I be worried?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain it seems that a wide cut in the indentation of the gum seems to be most probably an ulcer only and can be a gum ulcer that can occur due to traumatic injury to the gum caused by toothbrush or can be due to injury to the gum by some hard food leading to deeper deposition of the bacteria and food debris into gum crevice leading to infection and ulcer formation..
In case if it is associated with an infected tooth then it can be a dental/tooth abscess..

Consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated..

In case of gum abscess a deep cleaning of the gums followed by application of gum paint can help..

In case of tooth abscess root canal treatment of tooth followed by antibiotics and painkillers can help..

Hope this helps..

Thanks and regards..
