What Causes Painful Knot On Roof Of The Mouth?

my husband has a painful knot on the top of his mouth. as described to me, it is very hard, painful, size of a peanut and is located between the back of the roof of his mouth and his throat. he is 43, 6'2", 220 lbs., a long term smoker with a history of drug abuse.
