What Causes Painful Lump Under The Ear?

I have had pain just under my right ear next to the saliva gland, for the last 4-5 days. I have now noticed a lump under the skin (which isn t part of any glands). The lump is about 1cm long and less than half a centimetre wide. It feels like a vein or something tubular but it wasn t there before. What do you think it could be? Is it something minor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Painful lumps under the ear is commonly caused due to infection in the throat and neck like pharyngitis, swollen lymph nodes, swollen salivary glands, etc. Other medical conditions that can cause similar symptoms mastoiditis, sebaceous cysts, lipoma, or life threatening tumors, etc. Get clinically examined by an ENT, get required blood tests, investigations and imaging tests done to detect the pathology so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

In the meantime, you should gargle your throat with warm salt water 2-3 times a day. Take acetaminophen, one stat when needed. You can take a course of antibiotic like Augmentin. Stay away from addictions and do not wet the ear, be very careful while taking bath or shower.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
