What Causes Painful Menstruation While Having An Ovarian Cyst?

My menstrual periods for the most part have always been heavy and extremely painful. When I was 14, I had a pelvic ultrasound done and there was an ovarian cyst found. The doctor then put me on birth control, which I ve had to use for the past five years and it s also been switched a couple times because it seemed to start becoming less effective after a while. The first was Balziva, then there was Mononessa and now it s Amethia Lo. On numerous occasions over the past year or so, I ve had menstrual periods that lasted 20+ days, despite the fact that I m taking Amethia Lo, which is supposed to only make me only have a menstraul period every 3 months and it was nowhere near time for my menstraul period to start. They are extremely painful and heavy for the majority of the days. I had both a transvaginal and a pelvic ultrasound done a couple months ago but the results came back normal. My menstraul period just ended last Saturday after lasting for 19 days. Then it started back again on Tuesday, then stopped for a few days and it just started back again last night. I m really sure what else can be done. I m going to the doctor on Thursday to try again to see what s causing all of this. I m honestly just trying to find an answer and a solution. Thank you in advance for your help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
The symptoms you present could be caused by a number of medical conditions. Some of these causes are organic and will be revealed by an ultrasound.A normal recent ultrasound suggest organic abnormalities may be excluded.Other possible causes which may not be revealed by an ultrasound may include:
-Excess prostaglindines (hormones that make your uterus contract during menstruation and childbirth)
-STIs/PID
-Hormonal imbalances/ovarian dysfunction.
-Thyroid problems
I will suggest you see your Gynecologist for an infectious work-up and a hormonal work-up.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
