What Causes Painful Popping Of Shoulder?

My left shoulder popped out last week and it was extremely painful. I couldn t use my left arm for days. The pain is still there, but my range of motion is a bit better. An exray was negative. MRI results not yet back. I m not sure if I should try to use the shoulder or leave it to heal. What is your suggestion?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The popping of the shoulder can be caused by subluxations (the head of the shoulder bone goes out of its socket and goes back in its place later).
This tends to be a chronic condition and is worse with certain movements and may make your shoulder feel unstable.
The MRI may come out normal especially if the shoulder is back in its place.
A careful examination by the doctor will be able to identify if your shoulder is at risk for recurrent subluxations and he will give you proper advice on activities to avoid. Also, a physiotherapist may be of great help to strengthen the muscles that support the shoulder.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
