What Causes Painful Swelling Around The Ankle?

swollen ankle area of the outside bone above heal tender to the touch swelling reduces partially after sleeping. the area that runs vertically from bottom then up is very sensitive. about 2-3 weeks now more painful after work boots have been on an hour or so.
