What Causes Painful Swelling In Hands During 36 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

I am about 36 weeks pregnant and my due date is December 12. But when I woke up from a nap today my hands are all swollen and they hurt really bad to squeeze them. Plus the last few days my feet have been really swollen and they hurt too. Was just the wondering if that is normal.

Hi..Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
During third trimester of pregnancy there occurs large increase in size of baby, which puts pressure on inferior vena cava ( a large vein collected blood from below the heart). Due to this fluid retention occurs in body.
It's normal to have mild swelling in your hands during pregnancy. This is caused by a build-up of fluid, called oedema in the tissues. This fluid retention causes pressure on median nerve of hand causing Pain & tingling sensation of hands.

To control this you should always lay on left lateral position. Decrease intake of salt, it will help reduce fluid retention

Hope this information helps
