What Causes Painful Swelling In The Ankle And Feet?

My 92 yr old father has a swollen, bruised foot and ankle (left) it is very painful. Also has a large area of redness which feels a little warm to the touch. He was told he sprained it, however, he does not recall any injury. He just awoke a week ago and it was swollen. X-rays showed no broken INR is 2.1 and he is taking Warfarin 2.5 mg x 4 pills each evening. Could the leg have cellulitis and not be sprained? email is YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It looks like tendinitis and he can use anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil for pain and inflammation. Also, use ice compresses, keep limb elevated and take rest. The bruising may be from Warfarin usage.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka,
