What Causes Painful Swelling Under The Left Ear?

Hi Doctor,I have a swollen area under my left ear and it feels like a gland but not sure if it might be that or my ear it self.It is very sore to touch and the pain is like a ear ache but it below my ear along side the jaw. I just got over having a terriable cold,then I woke up the this. Thank you, Mark

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood your concerns.
The swelling just behind the left ear causing earache and sore to touch character indicate that this may be either a furuncle in the ear that has caused swelling on both sides of pinna.
Another possibility is of a lymph node enlargement due to infection in its drainage area.
Or an infected sebaceous cyst.
I would advise you the following in such a situation as the basic treatment remains the same irrespective of the diagnosis and only a few differences as per the cause found.
Get a clinical examination done and get a clinical diagnosis.
Get a prescription for an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory medication.
See the results as occasionally failure of medical management may need surgical intervention as per the cause thus found.
Hot compressed help with pain.
