What Causes Painful Swollen Ankle After Injury?

I twisted my left ankle on sat last week on a path that was higher than the grass and fell to the ground in a heap. I felt pain move straight up my leg to my back . Sometime later I looked at my ankle and the swelling around my ankle was the size of a tennis ball. I put ice on it from time to time and by the next day it didn t feel too bad but not really resting enough I am getting a throbbing pain on occasions. The swelling has gone down a bit but there is black bruising on the side and under my foot. i also get on occasions numbness in my foot . Do you think I should go to the hospital or am I being silly and should wait for it to heal naturally. I am on my feet quite a lot in my job and it is Thursday now . I would have thought my foot would be better by now?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to musculo-skeletal injury. X ray of the ankle joint will be helpful in detecting any bone fracture.

The swelling is caused due to accumulation of fluid and blood (haematoma) following the impact.
Symptomatic relief can be obtained by heat therapy, application of analgesic & muscle relaxant gel, intake of analgesics like Diclofenac + Serratiopeptidase preparations (to be taken after food) + Pantoprazole (to be taken 30 minutes before meals).
Supplements of Calcium & Vitamin D can be included in your diet which will help in strengthening of bones.

If symptoms still persist, kindly consult an Orthopedician for proper clinical examination.
Till then, maintain adequate hydration & nutrition status, take proper rest and avoid stress.

Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
