What Causes Painful Thumb/wrist?

My daughter's thumb/wrist is painful and in the mornings she has to pop it back into place. She's seen a physio who took x/rays and said although they can feel an odd bone, they can't see it on the x/ray. They have referred her to a rheumatologist. What could this be??
