What Causes Painful Tingling Sensation In The Knees?

I have intermittent electric shocks to my knee. Very painful and unexpected.. Each shock is brief,perhaps a second at a time. What do you think? I have some period of hours without any trouble followed by several attacks per half hour. I am an active 70 yr old male.
