What Causes Painfully Swollen Ear With Severe Itching?

Ear itched, swelled, turned very purple red and shiny, painful, all on outside. Dr. said ear canal looked good and prescribed Doxycycline, Prednisone, Gabapenyin. Also, ordered Lyme disease test because I was not sure what had happened. Ear is better but this same thing has spread to front of ear and into my face. It stings, burns, swollen, and red. Thought I was bitten but don t understand why it is leaving my ear and going into my face, all the way to my eye now. This all started right on my left ear lobe. Worried.

Hi,

Noted the history of developed of itchy red ear pinna, painful and spreading to the face, Doctor prescribed Doxycyclin, Prednisone, Gabapentin.
The commonest causes are as follows:
Insect bite could have caused such problems as the inflammation is limited to one area and spreading.
Red ear syndrome due to over response of the local blood vessels.
Erysipelas if a subcutaneous infection. May need additional treatment with Amoxicyclin.
Gabapentin may not be necessary.
You need additional anti-inflammatory medicine with painkiller properties like Ibuprofen if it suits you.
You can apply liquid povidone iodine locally if there is Erysipelas.
Do not put on any dressings as this increases local temperature.
Have regular follow up.
