What Causes Painfully Swollen Lymph Node Beside The Ear?

I have a swollen lymph node, about the size & consistency of a large pea, at the top of my right sided jaw line, right next to my ear. It swelled & turned black within a few hours. It is only painful when palpitation. Should I be concerned enough to go to the ER or can this wait until I can see my PCP?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain swollen lymph node beside the ear that has turned black and tender to touch seems to be due to infection and can be due to infection in oro-pharyngeal region [head and neck region]..

I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist or a General Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like biopsy can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

You can be advised to take a course of antibiotics like Augmentin, anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen and also do cool compresses over it to relieve infection and pain..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are having symptoms of painfully swollen lymph node beside the ear. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like reactionary lymphadenitis , tonsillitis , viral infection or allergic reaction . You should consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and get tested for bacterial infection like throat swab test and viral infections like viral culture test to rule out the exact cause of infection and treatment can be planned accordingly. Doctor may prescribe antibacterial or antiviral depending upon the diagnosis . If there are recurring episodes of the same then Tonsillectomy will only provide permanent relief. But in case if the swelling does not resolve a BIOPSY of the lymph nodes can help in making a correct diagnosis and a proper treatment . For now apply warm compresses to swelling and take anti histamine like benadryl.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
