What Causes Painless Bruises On Stomach?

My 14 year old son just came into my room to show me some pretty bad bruises that were not there this morning. He was totally baffled and said they did not hurt, but could not understand what happened. He is lifting weights with the football team after school and when I asked about that he said nothing came near his stomach. He is a type 1 diabetic if that helps.
