What Causes Painless Swelling Under Chin After Root Canal Treatment?

I have a very hard nodule/swelling in back of the center of my chin. It is quite hard and painless. There s minor distension below the jaw that I just noticed in last two weeks. I have had cold sores on lips and root canal on last tooth on upper right. Can I wait a few weeks to see if this improves or should I see a doc soon?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain hard and painless swelling under the chin along with distention or swelling under the jaw along with history of root canal treatment and having cold sores on lips..
The hard swelling seems to be due to swollen lymph nodes secondary to infection..
I would suggest you to consult an Infectious Medicine Specialist or a General Physician and get evaluated..
He can do a clinical evaluation and also advise you Biopsy or FNAC of the lymph nodes and treatment can be done accordingly..
As of now you can do warm compresses over the lymph nodes..
Take anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen..
The Physician can advise you antibiotics, antiviral medication and anti inflammatory depending upon the exact cause..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of painless swelling under chin after root canal treatment. Well there can be many reasons for this as infection occur again in root canal teeth because of microleakage of through gum infection and when left untreated it create hole also known as dental sinus. Need not to worry. You should maintain complete oral hygiene by brushing and flossing. I would suggest you to consult dentist for proper examination. Doctor may order X-ray for proper evaluation. Doctor may consider root canal again or extraction of tooth depending upon the condition of the tooth. Doctor will also prescribe antibiotics penicillin or metronidazole for at least for 10 days .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
