Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My right tonsil has been swollen since October 2015, it doesn t inhibit my swallowing and hasn t been sore since I developed it. But every now and again a white kind of tissue develops on it and is rather irritating, it feels like having a bit of food constantly on it. There are also some dark kind of circles on it. I have been tested for glandular fever and tonsillitis and both tests came back negative. I also took a general form of penicillin but this did no help. I have photos of it if that could help. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Tonsils are important lymphoid tissues which helps in offering protection against infections of the oropharynx region. It needs to be removed only when it gets inflammed and cause obstruction symptoms like difficulty in swallowing or breathing during sleep. Otherwise, swollen tonsils can be managed conservatively by taking decongestant medications and doing salt water gargling regularly. Taking medicated lozanges would also help. In case the swollen tonsils are bothering you, you can get its status checked by consulting ENT specialist, so that it could be appropriately managed. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
