What Causes Palpitations After Food Intake Post Gastric Bypass Surgery?

I had gastric bypass in 2010 and now I have to monitor my sugar intake very closely. I eat at a restaurant and I have bacon and two over easy eggs and two slices dry toast and put butter on it myself. Something raises my heart rate for some reason and I don t know why. Any thoughts?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the narrated food stuffs in form of easy eggs, dry toast slices with butter are not going to raise the heart rate. It is the underlying anxiety or stress related to previous surgery state that gives release of stress hormones as adrenaline and noradrenaline in the circulatory system which raises the heart rate.

My guidelines at present:
- Have preference over easily digestible food stuffs
- Avoid much spicy, oily, junk foods, dairy fat till possible
- Regular walking, exercises
- Weight control
- Deep breathing exercises and YOGA
- Prefer small frequent meals
- Chew your food very thoroughly
- Avoid smoking, alcohol if consuming
- Use bulk forming laxative in case of constipation

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
