Dear Jessica,
Thank you for your query.
It is highly likely you have
generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
The disorder is characterized experiencing excessive anxiety and worry about most things in one’s life and accompanied sleep problems, fatigue, difficulty concentrating,
restlessness or muscle tension. Patients may also experience autonomic symptoms such as trembling, sweating and heart palpitations. In order to diagnose GAD the symptoms should be lasting more than 6 months.
Diagnosis is clinical but other system disorders or medication/
substance abuse should be excluded. In
hyperthyroidism patients also experience palpitations, restlessness, anxiety,
nervousness, weight loss and heat intolerance. Lab tests: T4 and TSH level help to differentiate thyroid problems.
First line treatment of GAD is selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine or paroxetine. The patients are also advised to exercise regularly, manage anxiety, and decrease caffeinated beverages or nicotine.
I hope all of the above information will help you manage your condition. Please, feel free to ask me more in HCM if there is anything else you need to know.
Thank you,
Dr.Malik
