What Causes Panic Attacks While On Levothyroxine?

I am on levothyroxine as my thyroid has been totally removed. I am on a dose of 50mcg, down from 145 mcg (gradually). on the higher dose I had panic attacks and felt horrible. My question is this. What is the lowest dose of levothyroxine I could take and be ok. My numbers are within the normal limits. I am tired all the time, can't sleep, and if I do it is restless all night, I am crabby all the time, anxious...I just want to feel like myself again. I hate how I feel, and I have put on weight, am at 190 lbs (I am 5'5 1/2 in tall) I ride a bike a mile and a half a day...still lose nothing. I need help, want also to know if I can take Armour for thyroid med..

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. Your attending physician or Endocrinologist will be in better position to let you know about continuing with levothyroxine and/or armour thyroxine [which is made from pig's thyroid gland] since the latter is associated with severe anaphylactic reactions

2. regarding the lowest dose of levothyroxine it is to be remember that the dose should be individualized on the basis of clinical response and biochemical tests thus frequent monitoring of TSH and thyroxine is recommended when starting therapy or changing the dose.

3. general anxiety/irritability [panic attacks] are mentioned side effects of levothyroxine
