What Causes Pedal Edema While On Lamotrigine For Bipolar Disorder?

I'm 33, 5'11", 122 lbs, recently started on lamotrigine for possible bipolar w esting disturbance. Started 25mg 2 mos ago, just titrated to 37.5 x 5 days and have noticed pedal pitting edema (L>R). I'm also a doc so I know other causes - have a normal TSH And normal protein counts as of 2 mos ago. No other meds. No irth control (and not sexually active). No known heart failure or new SOB. Looks like this could be a lamictal SE - do i need to worry or just maybe step back my dose til it resolves?

Hello Doc,

Welcome to healthcaremagic!!

Yes all mood stabilizers can lead to pedal oedema including lamotrigine. What you can do is titrate up the dose more slowly. This will help in bipolar disorder as well as relieve the pedal oedema. But you should do it in consultation with your psychiatrist.

I hope this helps

God Bless
