What Causes Periods To Be Light And Short?

I am a 36 yr old woman who is experiencing for the first time two consecutive months of very short , light red and brownish periods this last for 2 days. I have been trying to get pregnat for at least a yr. I have taken two pregnancy tests and both were negitive. Why could this be happening?
