What Causes Persistent Abdominal Pain Along With Diarrhea In A Child?

Hi, my 4 yr old son is having stomach pain after motions. He has this off and on since 2 weeks. Initially he was given cefaxine 7.5 ml per day and feuritone (don't remember exact spelling). Got somewhat better but again got loose motions since yesterday. Doc again prescribed cefaxine 7.5 ml per day but even after 3 doses it seems to have little or no effect. I now don't know what to do. Please help.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Cefaxin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It would be appropriate if the stool sample sent to the lab indicates a bacterial infection requiring antibiotics or there is another bacterial source of infection (eg the urine or other aspect of the abdomen).

Many cases of diarrhea are due to viral infections and this would not respond to the cefaxin.
This is treated mainly with appropriate fluids to prevent dehydration , probiotics to shorten the course of infection.
Probiotics can be given on their own or in some yogurts.

He may need to be reassessed if he is not improving.

I hope this helps
