What Causes Persistent Bleeding After Having Mirena?
Hi on my second mirena. Have it in approx two years. Normally have a bleed every month for five to seven days. Last month bleed lasted at least 14 days. Expected to have my period approx two weeks later. No sign of another period its four weeks since the bled stopped. Should I be worried. What is normal.
Mirena intrauterine device or IUD contains levonorgestrel, a natural female sex hormone that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourse for long period. It may cause menstrual irregularities like prolonged or scanty bleeding during cycles, heavy or scanty bleeding during periods, absent, frequent or delayed menstrual periods, irregular uterine bleeding, spotting or breakthrough bleeding between periods, vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge etc. These side effects are mild and usually go away over time as the body adjusts to this medication. But any of these side effects persist for long or bother you then you should consult your doctor first for medical help.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
