What Causes Persistent Bouts Of Cough Post An Antibiotic Treatment?

After being treated with erythromycin for 7 days and now nearly a week after the last tablet, the cough has changed to bouts of continuous cough till out of breath and then cough a few more times, resulting in lethargy. Is that any cause for concern or that the 100day cough has to taper and end, albeit not soon enough?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sometimes after viral or bacterial infection airways are irritated and make you cough.

Other reasons are: Air you are breathing is dry, overused nasal decongestants, not drinking enough fluids or you have another undiagnosed disease like GERD asthma etc.

If your cough persist for 4 weeks or you are having other symptoms like difficulty breathing temperature take an appointment with your doctor.

Usually, coughs go away naturally after 2 weeks you have stopped antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
