What Causes Persistent Chronic Headaches?

A friend of mine is suffering from what he calls cluster headaches. He said he s had them for decades but hadn t had an episode for years and this past week has been struggling with one that s lasted nearly 2 weeks. What causes them? What are the triggers (food, environmental, etc.). He s got an appointment to see a neurologist this week for an hour. How can I help him? He s 60 years old. Thanks, Ingrid
