What Causes Persistent Chronic Pain In The Sternum?

Two weeks ago I was opening a can of rolls on the counter, when it exploded. I felt like something hit me in the sternum, I have no bruises. I had soreness in the area, it hurt to laugh, and cough. I was seeing the doc a few days later for something else, he did check, l have no broken bones. Five days later I was raking, when this burning went across my whole chest. It continued that day. Now a week later, the pain when I move or do certain things like, washing under my arms or lifting a cup of coffee. I can't get into bed and just lie back. I have to tip very slowly to my side, I can't use my arms because the pain is excruciating. Last night after moving a certain way, I wasn't able to get undressed. I could go on, but, maybe this enough information for some kind of explanation. Thank you for your help.

1. Although you have visited a Doctor it is wise to get a second opinion [chest specialist] since symptoms are still persisting and as chest pain is related with chest wall, following should be the symptomwise approach:

i .Think of fracture of rib, new or old.
ii. Think of costochondritis, very common anteriorly
iii. Think of muscle sprain

2. If by adopting
- hot water fomentation
- rest with minimal movements
- chest strapping
- intercostal nerve block
- taking an analgesic, anti-inflammatory enzymes, and muscle relaxant, the pain goes away continue with the same, however, if the pain is not relieved ask for Hb%, WBC, ESR & X-ray Chest
