What Causes Persistent Cough And Congestion Despite Taking Steroids And Antibiotics?
I was diagnosed with an infection of the lungs about 4 days ago and prescribed antibiotics and steroids.I have completed the antibiotic course, but still have 2 more days of steroids. I am now experiencing a raspy sound when breathing as well as continued cough and shortness of breath. I do cough up some mucus that is dark yellow and sometimes tending more to green. Should I be concerned and to the to ER at this time.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent cough and congestion despite taking steroids and antibiotics which is due to severe upper respiratory tract infection. The infection is probably a strep throat. Need not to worry. Avoid giving cold beverages. You should take mast cell stabilizers to prevent from infection. For now do warm saline rinses , take rest. You should avoid hot, sharp and spicy foods. I would suggest you to start with course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. You should consult ENT specialist without any delay . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or virus culture test. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin at least for 10 days along with mucolytic agents. You should get an x ray of the chest.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
