What Causes Persistent Episodes Of Cough With Discoloured Sputum?

I have had a persistent episodic cough with sometimes discoloured sputum. I have had intermittent intervals of fever and chills, with fatigue, breathlessness after doing activities. I have seen the doctors and have been through a series of tests. After a bronchoscope procedure, report has shown heavy growth of serratia marcescens, however I had previously used Augmentin,Cefuroxime,Avelox, ciprofloxociin, levofloxacin, and bactrim , at different times before the actual procedure without any improvement. What can I do now?

Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic.
Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Saddiq-ul-Abidin. I have read your question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

I am sorry to know what's been happening with you, discoloured sputum with cough signifies long standing throat and upper respiratory tract infection.

Although you took some medicines but it didn't work for you.But it's a good news that finally you know what bacterium is causing this. It get easy and targeted when you know what bug is causing your issues.
Usually after bronchoscopy culture is sent along with sensitivity to drugs.

I would suggest you to check your reports and see to which antibiotics your culprit bacterium is sensitive then you can discuss with your doctor about use of that antibiotic.

It's always easy to control the infection when culprit is known and appropriate antibodies are known, all you have to do it is to discuss with your doctor and start the meds and take them according to proper course and I am quite positive that things will get fine real soon.

Along with antibiotics, use if symptom relieving drugs like anti tussives and steam inhalation helps relieving symptoms till underlying infection gets resolved.

I hope this answered your question. If you have more queries I am happy to answer.Otherwise rate and close the discussion
