What Causes Persistent Eye Floaters?

Good afternoon, I have an occasional floater in my left eye - today it seemed to have exploded. 1st I saw s like long flashes of brown, followed by what looked like dirty water. I rubbed my eye several times and that eventually went away. I was out and was wondering how I was going to drive home. Now I have lots of spots, all different sizes in my vision. Thank you in advance for your assistance

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,
I understand your concern.
Eye floaters are small particles /shreds of collagen . these detach & float in vitrious humor( the gel like substance in back compartment of eye.) They are produced due to degenerative changes due to age / other disease process.
Mostly patient learns to live with the floaters & they do not harm vision till they are very small.
But one should consult a Retina specialist/ opthalmologist if it hampers vision/ it takes a bigger form.
Thanks.
