What Causes Persistent Fever And Back Pain In A Child?

My 8 year old began fighting a very mild cough w/congestion about 2 weeks ago. Treated w/OTC syrup. Also, seemed to have burning and urgency sypmtoms of a UTI about 10 days ago. All seemed to be gone about 5 days ago. Then she got sent home from school today due to uncharacteristic irritability, headache, slight cough down deep. No appetite or desire for liquids. Temp consistent at 100.1 for 5 hours, and now she s complaining of back pain just above her waist. She is generally quite happy w/no complaints.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your child have symptoms of persistent fever and back pain which seems to be due to viral infection of body due to compromised immunity of your body and susceptibility of getting infected. Sometimes initially the infection is viral but with times secondary bacterial infection occur , which cause further complication. Need not to worry. You should take proper rest. Do tepid sponging to lower down fever. I would suggest you to consult pediatrician without any delay. Doctor may prescribe anti viral( acyclovir), anti bacterial penicillin, along with anti inflammatory medications. Doctor may order throat swab test and blood test to confirm the diagnosis. You should take proper rest and muscle relaxants. For now take steam twice a day to relieve the congestion.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
