Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I have a 14 year old grandson who has had constant headaches since he was about 7 years old. At the end of July he started collapsing with pain on the right side of his head. He has collapsed on 6 occasions and takes a little while to come round. He does not know when he comes round what has happened. Do you have any ideas. He has had EEG and MRI scan with nothing showing up.
hi thank you for asking your concern and welcome HCM. from your description it seems like episodes of convulsions or epilepsy. if there is loss of consciousness and transient loss of memory is there it is mostly epilepsy. in this conditon EEG may be normal when patient is normal. sometime video EEG is performed. but we can not rely on EEG. if there is history of frothing of mouth, passing urine in cloths and uprolling of eyes during episode then it is almost confirmed and anti epileptic treatment can be started even if EEG is normal. i would suggest to record a video during episode if another person is there with you during episode and show it to your doctor, that will be much helpful to come to a diagnosis. in very few instances migraine can mimic like this but age of 7 year is unlikely age. you need to consult your pediatrician to make a diagnosis and management plan because it is some time difficult to arrive any diagnosis in case of convulsions. if you feel any doubt please ask us regards dr. Abhijit
