What Causes Persistent High Fever In A Child Despite Administering Calpol?

Hi,my daughter is 4 years old.Since yday evening she has fever n running on 101 to 103.Gave her calpol but fever does not subside,doctor has advised me to give her meftal p 2.5 ml after an hour of giving her calpol 250 if d fever does not subside.Please guide.

Hello, Thanks for the query.
When Anti-pyretic drugs (paracetamol, mefenamic acid or any other) are given their effect lasts 4 to 6 hours. But maximum effect is for about 4 hours or so. Therefore, fever tends to come back as the effect reduces. These drugs have only temperature reducing effect. No action on the cause of the fever. For that one needs to use a specific antibiotic or so.
In children mild fever is the body's defense to fight infection or invading agent. Do not worry for fever coming back. Use the prescribed drugs, keep the child well hydrated by using oral rehydration solution and water. And also give the antibiotic on the advise of your doctor. Thanks.
