What Causes Persistent Numbness In Right Hand, Stiffness In Thumb And Joint Pain?

I have had numbness in my right hand for 2-3 years that has gotten progressively worse. I cannot lift my pinky and ring finger and now my thumb has gotten stiff. I went to a hand specialist and took a nerve test for carpal tunnel but it came back negative. He sent me for a neck MRI which showed: multilevel degenerative disc and uncoverterbal joint changes disc osteophyte complex and unconvertebral arthropthy at C5-C6 causing mild central canal stenosis and bilateral neural foraminal narrowing mild left neutral foraminal narrowing at C6-C7 due to unconverterbral arthropthy small disc osteophyte complex at C3-C4 and C4-C5 due without spinal stenosis straightening of the normal cervical lordosis The doctor told me these symptom are not causing my problem. What should my next move be?

Hi,

Noted the history of numbness in right hand for 2-3 years, progressively worsening, can not lift 2 fingers, stiff thumb and so on, nerve conduction study for carpal tunnel being normal, MRI neck shows changes but are not responsible for your symptoms as per your Doctor; want to know what should be done further:
Take a second opinion of a Neurosurgeon for clinical evaluation, examination and correlation with the reports. This will clarify the matter further.
There are other chances of nerve compression causing the symptoms or can be a local cause like Rheumatoid Arthritis of the small joints of hand.
Other causes which can such problems ae Hansen's disease and some granulomatous disorders. You Doctors will be in a position to decide the cause and get you investigated accordingly to get a proper cause and thus have proper management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
