What Causes Persistent Pain In Buttock Radiating To Outer Thigh And Knee?

I am 48 yr old male in decent shape and fairly active. I slipped on ice 12 days ago. I fell very hard on my right hip/buttock. I had a lot of pain that night and got very little sleep as I could not get comfortable in the bed. I also couldn t seem to get warm, despite turning the heat way up in the hotel room and I had pain walking around the room. The next day, I was limping, but took two naproxen in the morning and went skiing anyway. Once I got moving, I was fine and didn t really notice my hip all day. A couple days later, a huge bruise showed up on my height hip/buttock. Now, 12 days later, the whole area is still really sore and I have a dull soreness down my outer thigh to the knee. I feel like I have less mobility than I did in the days after the fall. The bruise is changing color to less black and blue and more yellowish, but it s still about the same size. Is it possible to have a fracture in the greater trochanter area and still have the ability to move and ski as I did?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
The pain and appearance of bruise are expected after a fall on hard surface (hard ice).
No, it is not possible to walk with the presence of fracture.
Thus, a fracture of bone is unlikely.
Pain is due to soft tissue trauma.
Bruising is due to injury to internal bleeding and the color change is expected as the bruise matures.
You can continue pain killer for the pain, however, I would suggest you to consult your orthopedician for clinical assessment.

Thanks and take care
