What Causes Persistent Pain In Chest?

I have had chest pain for 5 days now. It started off as a dull pain across the top of my chest. Now it is all in the left side of my chest. I can t lie on my left side without been in pain and I can t bend or lean forward without pain. It also hurts to breath in deeply. The pain can be quite sharp in certain positions but I have a constant dull ache. What could be the cause? I have taken anti inflammatory tablets and indigestion tablets but nothing has helped.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the severe and persistent chest pain with difficulty in bending and leaning forward, breathing difficulty as well are in concern with costochondritis or intercostal nerve irritation most likely.

* In my clinic, after thorough clinical examination, I do recommend

- local application of heating pad over sore area
- use of spray or ointment with Diclofenac, Linseed oil or Capsaicin for excellent results
- better quality care with tramadol hydrochloride capsule after meals with antacid
- do not lift weight or persue strenuous activities
- deep breathing exercises on gradual basis
- avoid sleeping on left side of chest wall as direct pressure can increase the discomfort

* Discuss need of any x-ray or MRI chest during your planned visit to primary care physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
